Floaties Water Confidence Tips
Come on in ~ the water's great!
1. Babes in the water
- Blowing bubbles
This is an excellent way to start learning to breathe correctly when swimming. Babies and small children will enjoy this simple activity, especially if you make a game of it. Start by blowing gently on your baby's face, then lower your face into the water and continue to blow. Encourage your baby to copy you, with plenty of praise.
- Make it fun!
For tiny babies, bobbing up and down while saying "1, 2, 3, blow!" (and then blow bubbles) is fun. Games, rhymes and songs can also be great fun for small children.
All the old favourites can be adapted to a water environment. There's "Ring a ring o'roses" ending in "we all blow bubbles" or "Pop goes the weasel".
2. Splashing out
- Turning over
To help children feel more secure in the water, you can teach them to turn and paddle toward the poolside
- On the move
Supported by Armbands or a Swim Ring, a child can be encouraged to move around and visit other children in the pool. Give a child a ride on your back, pretending to be a horse or train and let the child make the noises.
3. First strokes
Learning to kick
- Both of you need to be at the same level in the water. Holding the thighs, move the legs up and down saying 'kick, kick' as you walk slowly backwards through the water.
- As confidence builds, gradually reduce the amount of support you give until you are supporting only under the shoulders.
- Resting the head on your chest with your arms outstretched, kick their legs as you move backwards through the water.
- As the child gains confidence, reduce your support, but continue to encourage kicking.
4. For older children
- Encourage older children to put their faces in the water by placing an object on the bottom of the pool but within their depth. Bobbing under the water to retrieve objects is a great game.
